Admission to an undergraduate programme in the School of Chemical and Process Engineering
XJMS1150 | Engineering Mathematics |
CAPE1040
This module is not approved as a discovery module
This module provides the fundamental mathematical methods to solve engineering problems.
- To be proficient in all standard methods of differential and integral calculus
- To solve differential equations using a variety of methods
- To apply and use vectors, linear algebra (matrices) and begin to use vector calculus methods.
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Have a knowledge and understanding of mathematics necessary for the analysis of, and to support applications of, key engineering principles and processes.
Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills:
Problem solving, forming and using mathematical models, application of mathematics to real-life situations, particularly in the context of chemical and materials engineering.
Problem solving, logical approach to problems, building mathematical models based on real-life situations.
Mathematical thinking and modeling, calculus.
Differentiation (parametric and implicit); Integration (substitution, parts, partial fractions, parametric, applications);
Differential equations (ODEs - first and second order, homogeneous); Factorials, summation, limits, hyperbolic trig; Vectors (scalar product, vector product, lines, planes); Matrices (arithmetic, elimination, inverse, solving systems of equations); Complex numbers.
