The aims of the module are to continue to develop academic skills building on knowledge and experience from BLGY1303. In this module you will cover
- Use of library databases and reference management software.
- Effective oral presentations.
- Scientific writing and understanding scientific papers.
- Writing a literature review
- Writing an abstract for a paper
- Writing essays under timed conditions
- Writing a CV and job application and undergoing a mock interview
On completion of this module students will have developed a range of transferable skills that they will apply to their future careers. These will include:
- written and spoken communication skills;
- enhanced research and library skills through finding information and analysing it for discussion, presentation and writing exercises
-analyse scientific data
- learn how to present oneself positively through a well written CV and during interview.
During the course of the module you will learn to research information, analyse it and present it in various formats for example as a literature review, abstract or an oral presentation using appropriate visual aids. You will also be given exercises in data analysis and/or experimental design. However these skills are also of value to future employers as most graduate jobs whether in biology or more broadly require the ability to research, analyse and present information in a variety of formats. You will have an opportunity to prepare a CV and job application and undertake a mock interview and obtain feedback.
