Objectives

The aim of the module is to develop and reinforce a range of scientific skills expected in high-quality Biochemistry graduates.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Engage confidently with the published scientific literature;
2. Extract and summarise the key points of a scientific paper;
3. Critically analyse the quality of published research;
4. Be aware of issues associated with conducting scientific research;
5. Be aware of modern laboratory techniques associated with their subject, the nature of the data they produce, and how they are presented;
6. Work with numerical scientific data and interpret their biological meaning.

Syllabus

Students will participate in group exercises: a series of general themes of topical importance to their degree programme will be considered. Students will attend seminars given by both academic staff and guest lecturers, which will address recent developments in biochemistry.

Students should develop problem-solving skills and will also participate in careers workshops and sessions to improve their interview/self-presentation skills.
