Pre-requisite qualifications

All compulsory modules have to be passed at levels 1 and 2. Students who fail to achieve 100 credits will be required to undertake an external re-sit in order to proceed. Students must achieve a minimum average grade of Borderline 2:1 at Level 2 Where the academic language of the host country is not English, normally a grade C at GCSE (or equivalent) in the appropriate language and successful completion of appropriate LANG module(s).

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should show evidence of:
- extended knowledge base in their subject by extension through the culture, institutions and working practices of another country;
- the study of particular, aspects and forms of visual art in the host country including stylistic conventions and surrounding discourses;
- the ability to independently sustain, evaluate and contextualise personal practice in Fine Art;
- an understanding of aspects of curatorship and the presentation, projection and marketing of art with reference to contributors to the art press of the host country;
- consolidation and synthesis of those aspects of the taught programme at the host institution that formed part of the syllabus;
- personal skills including communication, teamwork, problem solving, decision making and independent learning.

Skills outcomes

- Verbal and written fluency in constructing a logical and coherent argument
- Use of audio visual aids
- Participation in group discussions
- Co-ordination and dissemination of a range of historical, contextual visual information
- Using bibliographies and databases.

Syllabus

To be arranged with the host institution,(subject to prior agreement of the Programme manager) but will normally comprise a combination of:
- a research based studio practice supported by a learning contract negotiated between student and tutor(s) in an appropriate discipline;
- taught courses in the appropriate discipline and / or allied subject(s) chosen to complement and extend the Leeds degree programme;
- independent study focussing on defined aspects of the culture of the country located in. The study will be evidenced in a study file that comprises written material, documentation and practical studies;
- self-initiated group project with student or other peers in a form to be negotiated. This could be concerned with researching information, making a presentation or creating an event before a target group.

(Any alterations to the syllabus must be negotiated and agreed by the Programme Manager)

Private study

- Independent learning is a feature of the programme. The proportion of private study time to taught time to be agreed with the host institution.
- A learning contract aligned with a PDP will be established as a platform for shared expectations of outcomes.

Subject to the procedures of the host institution.

Additionally, students will maintain a Progress File and Personal Development Plan, sections of which will be emailed, twice during the year to a Study Abroad Module Manager.

The taught course and studio components will be assessed according to the methods used by the host institution. The Independent Study will be evaluated on students' return by designated tutors in the School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies. 100
