This module introduces critical methods in the arts and humanities. These methods will be developed in relation to key concepts including culture, ideology, hegemony, language, subjectivity, identity, gender and sexuality. These concepts will be studied through the analysis of cultural artefacts and practices. Students will develop an ability to critically analyse a wide range of cultural ‘texts’ with examples drawn from visual and literary cultures, film and music, media and practices of everyday life.

This module establishes skills in reading, discussing and writing. Through your engagement with the readings, the lectures and the seminars, you will develop the skills needed for the study of culture and media: attentive reading, listening and looking, critical thinking, and how to articulate your ides in reflective writing.
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Recognise the basic concepts and theoretical paradigms of cultural analysis.
2. Apply these concepts and paradigms in the analysis of discursive artefacts and practices.
3. Analyse the relations between systems of meanings and relations of social and political power and inequality.

Students have seminars which offer opportunities for discussion and feedback, from both tutors and peers. All tutors hold office hours that offer further formative feedback, in which students discuss paper topics and work in progress.
