This module covers the pathological appearances associated with obstetric, gynaecological and general medical ultrasound. This will enable the students to develop their image interpretation skills in more complex cases. Appropriate systematic approaches will be developed that are relevant in reviewing the pathology covered in this module.
This module will enable the students to understand the ultrasound appearances of pathological cases related to obstetric, gynaecological and general medical ultrasound. This module enables students to develop their skills in more complex areas throughout the programme enabling the student to develop their knowledge, understanding and analytical skills.
At the end of this module the student should be able to:
1. Analyse and evaluate the ultrasound appearances of complex pathology
2. Compare pathological manifestations to normal as demonstrated on ultrasound images/examinations
3. Demonstrate a systematic approach to image evaluation resulting in an understanding of their scope of practice and when to refer
4. Demonstrate presentation skills that include clear oral communication, time-keeping, engagement with the audience and high quality presentation slides.

Students will be given directed online learning activity to help consolidate the sessions/content delivered in that week. This will include the completion of workbooks based around the topics covered.
Students will be expected to undertake pre-reading and complete preparatory activities to contribute to lectures and practical activities.
Private study should be utilised to write up lecture notes and do pre- and post-session reading on the topics covered
The nature of this module is such that there is direct application to clinical practice. Students are encouraged to use every image viewed to assess knowledge of the pathology covered in this module. In this way students can identify areas they need to concentrate on and seek additional support
Formative activities and feedback will be provided to give students the opportunity to demonstrate a breadth of knowledge required and will be used to identify areas for tailored tutorials to address any areas of misunderstanding. Formative presentations will be undertaken to provide the students the opportunity to practice their presentation skills and to gain feedback from their peers and lecturers to help them effectively prepare for the summative assessment
At times, the workbook and practical image viewing sessions will focus on the theme of the presentation content within that part of the semester to allow for assessment of understanding and engagement of the students and allow them to plan an outline structure of the presentation for feedback from the lecturers.
