Demonstrate increased knowledge, understanding and confidence in application of the core skills in clinical practice by critically applying the scientific principles covered in the academic module within own practice. Evaluate a range of professional issues including patient centred care, communication, diversity, health inequalities, leadership, team work, self awareness, ethics, infection control, health inequalities, quality assurance, regulation and time management. Practice the skills required of a graduate physiologist.
This module will build upon the theory delivered within theory based modules, enabling students to further develop a broad appreciation of the range of work undertaken within both invasive and non invasive cardiac services, maintaining previously learnt clinical skills and participating in advanced cardiac procedures.
The module will build on issues within clinical practice including diagnostic investigations, ethical considerations, professional responsibilities, and the importance of potential for employability specifically within the fields of invasive and non invasive cardiac services
1. Develop clinical skills required for cardiac device implant and follow up
2. Develop the skills required for basic echocardiographic investigations
3. Expand on skills required in all areas of cardiology
4. Develop key employability characteristics in line with professional body requirements
5. Develop skills to enable successful onward career development.
6. Critically evaluate the patient pathway within cardiac investigation, diagnosis and treatment
Students will be introduced to cardiac device implant and cardiac ultrasound. They will practice these skills and be assessed clinically to perform basic procedures.
Students will continue to practice skills assessed at level 1 and 2 to include ECG, ambulatory monitoring, Functional testing and cardiac catheterisation.
Observation and participation of the work carried out by Healthcare Professionals within a cardiovascular environment and participating in routine running of all investigations both invasive and non-invasive.
Develop skills of effective communication, interpersonal skills and team working in the context of health care. Address barriers to effective communication and strategies to overcome them.
Develop knowledge in management and evaluation of adverse incidents, data management (paper and electronic), Infection control, Advanced Life Support

Students should utilise this time effectively to complete their online practice portfolio and to complete their research/ background reading required for completing the summative assessment essay.
Students can gain formative feedback on the practice portfolio on pebblepad, as well as during clinical visits. Formative feedback will also be provided on draft essay submissions.

The essay will constitute the assessment method for students to demonstrate the pulling together of all content across the 3 years of the programme and consolidating how the patient pathway supports patient diagnosis and treatment. The portfolio will allow students to demonstrate the key employability characteristics required as a graduate cardiac physiologist and provides evidence of clinical experience. Both assessed pieces of work must be passed in order to pass the module. There is no compensation between the two pieces of work. Failure of either element will result in a resit opportunity for the failed component(s) of assessment and a capped overall module mark of 40% following a pass at resubmission.
