This module is a clinical practice module where students are able to integrate their theoretical knowledge to practice, whilst gaining a range of ultrasound examinations, relevant to year 2.
The aim of this module is to build on experience gained in year 1 and extend the range and complexity of the ultrasound examination the students perform and report. Students will further integration of theoretical knowledge into clinical practice and develop their interpersonal skills with staff and patients. They will develop a wider and deeper knowledge and understanding of their role in patient care and patient safety.
They will develop a deeper understanding of multidisciplinary working in healthcare and further enhance knowledge and understanding of their wider role in patient care and patient safety.
At the end of this module the student should be able to:
1. Evaluate the effectiveness of ultrasound in producing a diagnosis for a wide variety of conditions and pathologies and discuss the clinical indications and the appropriateness of departmental protocols.
2. Demonstrate an ability to image a wide variety of patients and anatomical areas in a variety of environments.
3. Undertake physical patient care during examinations and demonstrate an ability to adapt basic technique in light of the physical and psychological challenges presented by imaging on patients with a variety of conditions.
4. Demonstrate effective management of self well-being, workload and evaluate their inter-professional working in a range of clinical environments.
5. Be able to interpret and discuss a wide variety of images, from different specialities, and to assess how these images relate to the ultrasound examination.

- Students will gain skills to enable them to undertake ultrasound examinations in obstetric, gynaecological and general medical on a range of patients
- They will be able to use medical ultrasound safely and effectively in accordance with local protocols and practice in a manner that promotes health and safety under supervision.
- The module will give the student the knowledge and skills to be able to relate a patient’s signs and symptoms or disease processes, to the examination being undertaken.
- Students will further develop their interpersonal skills and communication skills to enable them with both staff and patients in an appropriate manner.
- Students will demonstrate the skills to care for their patients both physically and psychologically, during examinations they undertake and ensure they manage their immediate environment, ensuring the safety of all those with whom they interact.
- Students will explore current research on ultrasound and other relevant imaging modalities and the appropriateness of their use in diagnosis, patient care with regard to those of higher dependency and communication within the multidisciplinary team.

Private study is given during clinical placement only for the purpose of PebblePad portfolio completion. This is allocated at a ½ day per week of the student placement.
During clinical placement students will be involved in tutorials with practice educators or clinical tutors, and individual clinical interviews to identify learning needs, discuss areas of good practice and identify areas for development.
Students can gain formative feedback via weekly assessment forms whilst on placement. These will allow students to understand the level at which they are working clinically and the standard. This is both in written form and verbally from the supervising sonographer.
A plan of the essay can be submitted for written feedback prior to the summative assessment.
For the portfolio regularly scheduled clinical interviews with practice educators and clinical tutors on placement will allow progress feedback on the portfolio competencies.
Pebble pad will allow the module leader to monitor progress in the portfolio.

No compensation between elements of assessment. All elements of assessment must be passed to pass the module. Must achieve competency to pass portfolio and on-going clinical assessment. In the event of failure of any element the maximum mark that can be awarded on resit for the module will be capped at 40.
