This module introduces the key theories and strategies surrounding adult aural rehabilitation. It covers more advanced considerations of hearing ability and technological aspects of rehabilitation.
This module introduces key concepts of sound and speech perception and how various hearing device strategies link with these concepts. Advanced hearing aid technologies will be outlined along with how these technologies can be used as audiological rehabilitation interventions.
On completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. Assess the use of various hearing aid features and strategies to support the needs of hearing-impaired individuals
2. Explain different fitting options for aiding hearing-impaired individuals
3. Discuss key perceptual and suprathreshold aspects of hearing and speech perception and link these to hearing device strategies

Topics covered will include:
- The effects of having a hearing impairment on communication including an overview of how speech sounds are produced and perceived
- Binaural hearing and the effect of having a hearing impairment on spatial hearing ability
- Typical hearing aid features and strategies that link to various aspects of hearing impairment
- Overview of cochlear implants and other less routine hearing devices

Students will be provided with directed reading for each lecture or practical. Students will use this time to consolidate the teaching provided in lectures and for private study. Students will also use this time for assessment preparation and writing.

Both assessed pieces of work must be passed in order to pass the module. There is no compensation between the two pieces of work. Failure of either element will result in a resit opportunity for the failed component(s) of assessment and a capped overall module mark of 40% following a pass at resubmission.
