To develop an understanding of the pathophysiology of common cardiovascular, respiratory and sleep conditions that often result in referral for investigation to a Cardiovascular, Respiratory or Sleep healthcare service.
The overall aim of this module is to ensure that the student understands the breadth of the application of science within cardiology. The student will develop an understanding of pathophysiological concepts and conditions related to Cardio-respiratory conditions.
On completion of this module the student will have knowledge in:
1. Discuss the major abnormalities of physiological control mechanisms in diseases of the Cardiac, Vascular and Respiratory systems.
2. Discuss cellular, tissue and systems responses to diseases of the
3. Cardiac, Vascular and Respiratory systems concentrating on disorders of growth, tissue responses to injury, cell death, inflammation, neoplasia,
4. Discuss normal and abnormal immune responses, atheroma, thrombosis, embolism and infarction.
5. Discuss the basis of common infections of the Cardiac, Vascular and Respiratory systems.
6. Discuss common diseases that affect the Cardiac, Vascular, Respiratory and Sleep Physiology.
Within this module students will develop disease specific knowledge transferable for practice. An understanding of a range of pathologies that affect prognosis in the Cardiac patient population

Students will receive time within the module for private study, during this time will be required to access, utilise and evaluate original research and other scholarly articles in order to support learning and prepare for summative assessments. The VLE will also include relevant guidance documentations, power point presentations and associated hand-outs.
Student progress will be monitored via group discussions relating to the application of this knowledge to the clinical workplace and disease progression and prognosis.
