Students taking this module will gain an understanding of the qualities associated with effective communication including when delivering unexpected news and will develop the confidence and practical skills needed to communicate effectively in a range of situations, including clinical practice contexts and the workplace using the ASCKS framework .
The aim of this module is to enable the students to gain an understanding of the qualities associated with effective communication in medical ultrasound and will develop confidence and practical skills needed to communicate effectively in a range of clinical situations, including when delivering unexpected news.
At the end of this module the student should be able to:
1. Understand the qualities associated with effective communication in a range of situations in ultrasound
2. Demonstrate confidence and practical skills needed to communicate effectively in a range of situations, particularly when delivering unexpected news
3. Analyse the cultural construction of effective communication
4. Understand connections between their thoughts, expressions and bodily actions when communicating with patients
5. Demonstrate an effective command of a range of communications skills, both verbal and non-verbal for use in clinical practice based on the ASCKS framework
i) Evaluate communication and identify different forms of communication including when delivering unexpected news.
ii) Verbal communication, exploring how speech and interpersonal talk work including when delivering unexpected news.
iii) Non-verbal communication and how so-called body language shapes communication including when delivering unexpected news.
iv) Explore the meaning of confidence and the skills associated with it.
v) Explore uses, forms and techniques of verbal and non-verbal communication including when delivering unexpected news
