Module summary

This module introduces the fundamental theory underpinning routine adult audiological practice. The module runs in parallel with the ‘Audiological Clinical Skills 1’ module.

Objectives

The aim of this module is to provide that the theory that underpins a range of basic audiological tests and procedures used routinely with adult populations (e.g. pure tone audiometry, tympanometry). This module will run alongside the ‘Audiological Clinical Skills 1’ module.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this module students will be able to:

1) Demonstrate a basic knowledge of common audiological disorders and their site of lesion.

2) Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the application and interpretation of the routine audiological procedures: history taking, otoscopy, pure tone audiometry and tympanometry

3) Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the relationship between assessment results and common hearing disorders.

Skills outcomes

Understanding of the theory behind routine audiological tests and basic audiological test results (including: history taking, Otoscopy, Pure tone audiometry, Tympanometry). Understanding of basic hearing aid repair.

Topics covered will include:

- Epidemiology and introduction to hearing impairment

- Audiological history taking

- Otoscopy

- Pure tone audiometry

- Tympanometry

- Hearing aid maintenance

Private study

Students will be provided with directed reading for each session. Students will use this time to consolidate the teaching provided in lectures and for private study. Students will also use this time for assessment preparation.
