Module summary

This module integrates Arabic language learning with contemporary themes drawn from Arab media, business, and entrepreneurship. It aims to develop students’ linguistic proficiency in Arabic through engagement with authentic materials from Arabic media outlets and business contexts. The module introduces a range of media and business Arabic genres, enabling students to enhance their reading comprehension, writing, translation, and oral communication skills. Emphasis is placed on expanding vocabulary relevant to media and business discourse, thereby refining students’ ability to use Arabic effectively in professional contexts. Through a variety of practical exercises and authentic materials, students will develop Arabic language skills, gaining the ability to comprehend and analyse a broad range of Arabic media and business texts. Please note this is an optional module and runs subject to enrolments. If a low number of students choose this module, then the module may not run and you may be asked to choose another module.

Objectives

This module aims to develop learners’ advanced proficiency in Arabic for professional, media, and business contexts. This aim will be achieved by systematically enhancing learners’ reading, listening, speaking, translation, and writing skills through sustained engagement with authentic Arabic-language materials and communicative tasks drawn from contemporary professional environments.

It also aims to deepen understanding of Arabic media, business, and enterprise genres through critical analysis of authentic texts, fostering advanced linguistic awareness, genre-specific comprehension, and contextual interpretation.

In addition, the module aims to enable learners to produce authentic Arabic texts for media and business settings through guided practice that develops linguistic accuracy and cultural literacy for effective professional communication.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will be able to:
1. Critically analyse authentic Arabic media and business texts, demonstrating interpretive insight
2. Critically evaluate cultural and ethical norms in Arabic media and business practices, demonstrating intercultural and professional awareness
3. Apply Arabic language skills in real-world media, business, and enterprise contexts

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

There will be ongoing student progress monitoring in weekly interactive classes. Seminar and conversation class in particular will give students opportunities to demonstrate their language skills and receive feedback from the tutor; they also provide space for peer learning and feedback. Guidelines for preparing for coursework and presentations will be given in class. Practices that prepare students for summative assessment will be incorporated into class activities and homework. Through weekly homework, students will receive written feedback from the tutor.
