Module summary

This advanced Arabic language module is designed to develop students’ analytical and expressive skills across a range of written and spoken genres. Through engagement with diverse and authentic Arabic texts, students will enhance their ability to interpret, analyse, and respond critically to language in context. The module places particular emphasis on understanding the function and structure of language within different genres, while also strengthening oral and aural proficiency through interactive and communicative activities. Students will be encouraged to explore linguistic nuance and cultural depth, fostering both fluency and intercultural competence.

Objectives

This module aims to provide advanced, integrated training in oral, aural, reading, and written Arabic. It is designed to refine students’ communicative competence across all four language skills, with a particular emphasis on accuracy, fluency, and cultural awareness. By the end of the module, students will be able to engage confidently with complex texts, express nuanced ideas in spoken and written Arabic, and demonstrate a high level of comprehension and interaction in diverse academic and professional contexts.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will be able to:

1. Produce clear, coherent, and well-structured written texts in Arabic, tailored to academic and professional audiences, with appropriate use of register and style
2. Understand advanced Arabic texts of different genres, demonstrating awareness of syntactic, lexical, and pragmatic structures, and applying appropriate reading and comprehension strategies
3. Present academic and contemporary issues orally in Arabic, structuring information clearly and engaging with alternative viewpoints
4. Use digital technologies effectively to present structured arguments in Arabic clearly and engagingly 5. Reflect critically on personal and linguistic development

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Compositions and translations will be set as homework and returned with personalised feedback throughout the module.

For speaking and listening, students will receive individual oral and written feedback on their in-course presentations. Past exam papers will be made available for students to practise with, and individual feedback will be provided upon request.

In the final week of Semester 2, each class will focus specifically on revising and preparing for the summative assessments.
