This module is approved as a discovery module
This module is offered as discovery module for undergraduate students. The aim of this module is to progress students from beginner level to the intermediate level in the four skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening). The module will also help in raising awareness of the linguistic and cultural differences between Arabic and English. Please note this is an optional module and runs subject to enrolments. If a low number of students choose this module, then the module may not run and you may be asked to choose another module.
On completion of this module students will be able to: understand simple instructions, respond appropriately in everyday situations, collect information from short texts in the target language, write limited pieces of work in the target language, express themselves using limited vocabulary and formulaic expressions and use the target language in a limited number of contexts so that it can be understood by a sympathetic native speaker. Students will also develop an understanding of the structure of the language and the culture of the countries where the target language is spoken.
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1- Demonstrate understanding of simple instructions in Arabic.
2- Identify required information from short written and spoken texts in Arabic.
3- Communicate in Arabic using basic vocabulary and expressions so that it can be understood with the active collaboration of a competent speaker of Arabic.
Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
4- Communicate ideas concisely and coherently.
5- Demonstrate an understanding of commonly used vocabulary and everyday expressions related to the covered topics.
6- Identify linguistic and cultural differences in the use of Arabic to guide appropriate use of style and register.
Details of the syllabus will be provided on the Minerva organisation (or equivalent) for the module.
