Module summary

Presenting aspects of health care or health outcomes across space is of increasing importance. This module is aimed at individuals working with health data to introduce them to the analysis of spatial units and give them the skills necessary to use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for understanding and presenting key information. The course will build on the Health Data Analytics module to develop a critical understanding and knowledge of the relevant application of GIS methods using both open source and licensed software.

Objectives

The purpose of the module is to provide students with a solid grounding in:
- The fundamentals of the analysis of spatial units and their relevance to health
- The application of relevant GIS methods to better understand and visualise their health related data.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module students will be able to:
1. Understand data governance issues around the use spatial data in health, including issues related to identification of home address from global positioning systems or unit postcodes (lecture & tutorials)
2. Critically apply appropriate spatial scales and methods to health data (lectures, tutorials & practical sessions)
3. Appropriately apply spatial methods alongside statistical methods (lecture, tutorials & practical sessions)
4. Understand the context of spatial data in healthcare and be able to critically evaluate and synthesise results appropriate to the research question (lectures, seminars & practical sessions)
5. Communicate appropriately and creatively results from spatial analysis (seminars and practical sessions)
6. Understand and perform spatial analysis using QGIS (practical sessions)
7. Understand and perform spatial analysis using R (practical sessions)

- Spatial data cleaning and matching methods
- Spatial analysis versus spatial statistics
- GIS methods in QGIS (licenced software) and R (Open source software)
- Application of GIS models to study disease in populations
- Application of GIS models to study provision of healthcare
- GIS data visualisation and communication
- Novel applications of GIS methods including at local and international scale
