This module is not approved as an Elective
The module is designed to develop specialist skills required by transport engineers. Traffic engineers require an understanding of the concepts of saturation flow, how the queues build up and dissipate at junctions and the principles involved in designing signalised junctions. Engineers also require advanced understanding of the principles and methods to design complex intersections. The module is divided into two halves as such dealing with traffic signals and geometrical design of complex junctions.
To ensure that students are equipped with the theoretical understanding and practical skills needed for designing safe and efficient highway links and junctions, and that they understand the advantages and disadvantages of different solutions and their appropriateness in different circumstances.
To ensure that students have a sound understanding of the principles of traffic signal control including its design, and that they understand how it interacts with other control and advice systems.
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
LO1: develop an understanding of the theory underpinning the design of highway links;
LO2: develop an understanding of the theory underpinning the design of roundabouts;
LO3: assess and evaluate the capacity of a roundabout;
LO4: develop an understanding of the theory underpinning the design of signalised cross-road junctions;
LO5: design a signalised roundabout;
LO6: learn the principles of how SCOOT system works.
Skills learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
SO1: Skills with using roundabout designing software ARCADY
SO2: Skills with using signalised junction designing software LINSIG
SO3: IT skills in collating the data needed and using specialist design software
SO4: Problem solving/analytical skills
SO5: Creativity
SO6: Critical thinking skills
SO7: Information searching skills
Details of the syllabus will be provided on the Minerva organisation (or equivalent) for the module
