The module starts by introducing the general concept of transport modelling, including key objectives, terms and definitions in transport modelling, and briefly the basic four-stage models. It then introduces each of the four stages of transport modelling in turn: trip generation, trip distribution, modal split, and traffic assignment. The key mathematical modelling techniques are introduced for each stage, and examples are made to illustrate the workings of these models. The second part of the module introduces more advanced transport modelling techniques, which provide improvements on or alternatives to the traditional four-stage modelling approach.
To ensure that students understand the role and purpose of transport models, that they are familiar with the advantages and disadvantages of each of a range of modelling techniques available and are able to select an appropriate model for a given task. Also to ensure that they are able to use a modelling package to analyse real-world problems.
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. To understand the role and purpose of the main types of transport models;
2. Familiarity with the advantages and disadvantages of each of a range of modelling techniques available;
3. Select an appropriate model for a given task;
4. Apply a basic modelling package to analyse a realistic 'real life' problem.

Monitoring of progress is carried out through weekly feedback in lectures and small group tutorials, as well as detailed feedback on the coursework assignment due in at the end of term before the exam takes place.
