This module places the digital patterning (printing and laser cutting/engraving) of textiles into focus. The method of digital printing and laser patterning will first be introduced, and a comparison with analogue methods explored. Methods of managing the process of digital patterning including the particular needs and opportunities brought by a digital process will be explored. New aesthetic opportunities will also be discussed.
The module will develop an understanding of the digital patterning processes, and through this understanding the opportunities, challenges and strategies to successfully integrate digital technologies and capitalise on new aesthetics beyond the established textiles norms will be gained.
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Compare digital and analogue processes
2. Critically examine the processing steps in creating an advanced digitally patterned textile product and discuss the limitations associated therewith
3. Critically analyse the current role of digital patterning in the industry and its potential future course

Student progress will be monitored through attendance at lectures, practical classes, and engagement with the discussion surrounding the EBL task in tutorials. This also forms the basis of formative feedback regarding assessment 1.
Formative feedback for coursework 2 will be provided as a specific tutorial session (students bring their work to date to tutorial where it is considered by the teaching staff, and feedback on their work is provided verbally on a one-to-one basis).

Resit of coursework 2 will be of identical format and very similar brief; Resit of coursework 1 will take the form of an 800-1,000 words report capturing the content of the research related to the EBL as well as requiring some independent (but guided) expansion of knowledge, and therefore to both LOs 2 and 4.
