This module uses a combination of lectures and one-to-one supervisor meetings to enable students to complete a sustained piece of independent research in their chosen field of study and present it in the form of a Research Report in journal article style.
1. To provide students with experience of independent research, applying appropriate research methods, accounting for risks and ethical considerations.
2. To empower students to able to address major challenges in their chosen field of study through planning, performing and presenting original research.
3. To enable students to develop expert knowledge in their chosen field of study.
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
SSLO1: Develop a research question into a sustained program of research, accounting for the time and resources available and any risks or ethical considerations
SSLO2: Engage with and critically analyse the scientific literature, and show an in-depth understanding of your chosen research area
SSLO3: Justify the methodological decisions, results and conclusions of your research with structured and coherent arguments
SSLO4: Present your research findings in a written format at a professional level, including the appropriate use of figures, tables, appendices and referencing
SSLO5: Present your research findings to a general audience in a written format
Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
SKLO1: Search for, evaluate and use appropriate and relevant information sources to help strengthen the quality of academic work and research (Academic Skills: Information Searching).
SKLO2: Using critical thinking to weigh up different arguments and perspectives, using supporting evidence to form opinions, arguments, theories and ideas, and thus identify and respond to a research gap (Academic Skills: Critical Thinking).
SKLO3: Demonstrate an ability to generate ideas, demonstrate originality and imaginative thinking, and think beyond expected or accepted ideas (Work Ready Skills: Creativity).
SKLO4: Work independently to plan and execute research activities to expand or provide new knowledge of a topic or subject (Work Ready Skills: Research).

SKLO6: Identify ethical questions while selecting an appropriate method to a sustainability problem, recognising and implementing risk considerations (Sustainability Skills: Ethical).

Oral feedback: Students will receive oral feedback on their ongoing research at supervisor meetings, where they will receive guidance on the direction and correctness of their research direction. Students are expected to have a maximum of five supervisor meetings during the module. In addition, they will receive oral feedback during learning activities in workshops.
Written feedback: Student will receive written feedback on one draft of their Research Report. This will take the form of general comments on scientific issues and language.
