Module summary

The module offers students a grounding in debates on gender, sexualities and popular culture, considering what popular culture is, how it is conceptualised by critical theorists and the ways in which feminist researchers have departed from the canon. The module covers a wide range of popular forms and practices, exploring how genders and sexualities are operationalised within media representations, sport, music and fashion subcultures, fandoms and oppositional readings and examines the differences between the popular and populism with respect to contemporary social media personalities.

Objectives

The module aims to furnish students with the theories and approaches from gender and sexuality studies necessary to understand and interpret popular cultural forms and practices from a critical perspective. International examples will be used to explore key themes such as popular feminism and popular misogyny, beauty culture and masculinities. Students will learn how to create their own digital podcast critically interrogating through the lens of gender and/ or sexuality a popular cultural form or practice with which they are familiar.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:

LO1: To develop a thorough working understanding of the nature of popular culture and consumer culture.

LO2: To think critically about the ways that gender and sexuality are utilized and constructed through popular culture.

LO3: To effectively support each others’ learning and explore issues, including presenting and giving feedback on work-in-progress podcasts.

LO4: To produce a podcast that demonstrates detailed understanding of the application of gender and sexuality theory to a popular cultural form or practice.

LO5. to write a short reflection on the making of the podcast.

Skills learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:

1. Apply critical thinking skills to a range of social issues

2. Create digital content showcasing social issues

3. Communicate complex information, including concepts, verbally and in written form
