Module summary

This module explores gender in global security challenges using a feminist perspective and a postcolonial, intersectional, and comparative approach. The module studies topical themes such as conflicts, terrorism, sexual violence, climate change and researching gender in international security. Attention will be given to understanding the current security challenges using case study examples from conflicts from around the world and to theories and debates that are central to developing solutions about how best to respond these challenges.

Objectives

The module aims to enable students to develop an understanding of contemporary security challenges –armed conflict, sexual violence, terrorism, and climate change from a gender perspective. The teaching and learning activities will focus on developing knowledge about each specific topic, policy frameworks, and theories and debates around it.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module students will be able to:

-Demonstrate an advanced and critical knowledge of the key challenges in international security from a gender perspective.
-Demonstrate analytical skills and critical thinking in discussing gender and security and to link this to theory, practice, and a variety of contexts.Demonstatte the capacity to critically engage with the relevant feminist literature on gender and international security.
- On successful completion of this module students will be able to:

- Write and criticise policy debates and priorities, with a special focusfor addressing gendered experiences.
- Deploy and critically assess feminist and decolonial approaches to researching..
- The ability to present and write concise and cogently structured arguments.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

In this module, 2 pieces of coursework are used. As a formative, students will submit a 1,000 words critical literature review and to get feedback on their learning.
