Module summary
This module introduces theoretical and empirical approaches to the study and experience of insurgency and counter-insurgency.
Objectives
On completion, students should be able to:
a) Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the concept of insurgency, the typology of insurgency, the origins and strategies of insurgents, and the formation of policy to counter-insurgency and provide security.
b) Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the history of insurgency in the 20th and 21st centuries.
c) Be able to appraise competing theories and interpretations of the concept, the origins and dynamics of insurgency and
counter-insurgency.
d) Demonstrate a critical understanding of a range of theoretical and empirical literature on insurgency and allied fields.
e) Use analytical skills to present independent research on topics in this area.
Learning outcomes
Students should acquire an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the theoretical and analytical implications of contemporary insurgency and counter-insurgency, with in-depth knowledge of recent developments in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Syllabus
The nature of insurgency and counter-insurgency; theoretical analysis and doctrinal evolution; ethical issues; how militaries learn (Iraq); exit strategies (Afghanistan).
