Module summary

This module discusses the theories and practices of global development and public governance. It explores competing views and expressions of global development with a focus on intersecting inequalities. This lays the foundations for critical analysis of poverty, access to basic services, education, health, livelihoods and the environment, focused through the lens of public governance. This develops knowledge and understanding of complex multi-sectoral and multi-level governance challenges.

Objectives

This module aims to enable students to be able to analyse global development from a complex interdisciplinary perspective. It equips you to analyse competing ideas and practices of global and local development. It enables you to apply this approach to a range of sectoral issues such as (but not limited to) poverty and inequality, access to services, natural resources allocations and management, economic transformation and livelihoods. It also enables you to explore multi-sectoral and multi-level governance challenges of producing ‘development’, through the application of concepts from public governance and political economy.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:

1. Critically reflect on the concepts and practices of global development through specific engagement with sectoral challenges and local contexts..
2. Apply a public governance lens to sectoral challenges and local contexts to identify and articulate complex multi-sectoral and multi-level dynamics.

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
3. Develop and communicate ideas and analysis accurately, effectively, and persuasively tailored to different audiences
4. Gather and interrogate information and empirical research from a range of disciplines and perspectives to conduct rigorous analysis of multi-sectoral and multi-level governance
