Module summary

The purpose of this module is to give a new generation of leaders and policy makers in the creative and cultural industries the necessary tools to take informed decisions and develop sustainable practices in their work. In order to do so, the module discusses international contributions in the field of sustainable development, taking into account both theoretical perspectives and real-life case studies.

Objectives

The objectives of this module are to help students develop an understanding of theoretical underpinnings relating to culture in relation to sustainable development and how this might relate to policy and practice. In groups, students will explore sustainable development scenarios from a cultural perspective based on real world issues to illustrate the inherent complexities of the contexts in which decision makers operate.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Develop an assured understanding of key issues in sustainable development;
2. Critically compare and analyse different perspectives in sustainability studies;
3. Develop a clear understanding of how matters related to sustainability and arts and culture interact;
4. Apply key principles of sustainable development to the field of the arts and culture;

Skills learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
5. Develop problem-solving skills related to real-life sustainability issues;
6. Communicate sustainability issues.

Syllabus

The module focuses on culture ‘in’, 'for’, and ‘as’ sustainable development. By addressing international scenarios through case study approaches and various policy contexts, the students will engage with the following key areas: drivers and outcomes of sustainable development, and culture and its place within the subject of sustainability. The module will explore numerous spatial scales through case study analysis using the cultural landscape as an challenging arena for stakeholder. Through systems thinking and the exploration of theories of change, the role of policy, communities, and activism will build awareness of the complexities of problem-solving in sustainable development.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will have the opportunity to discuss their assignment plans at a tutorial. Furthermore, they will be able to receive feedback on their ideas during seminars.
