Students will conduct a scoping review of one World Health Organization (WHO) International Health Regulation (IHR) benchmark to determine the response effectiveness of strengthening that benchmark prior to a health emergency.
In this module you will learn how to employ a research protocol to analyse an aspect of a well-established global regulation (IHRs). In doing so you s will learn to interpret quantitative studies and determine the emergency response effectiveness or ineffectiveness of strengthening that IHR benchmark.
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Apply a WHO research protocol to assess a particular IHR benchmark.
2. Identify appropriate methodologies to locate and assess quantitative studies on an IHR benchmark.
3. Synthesise information for IHR benchmark analysis.
4. Evaluate the effectiveness of pre-emergency benchmark strengthening during emergency response.
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
1. Ability to tailor and apply an existing WHO research protocol to assess a particular health programme or intervention.
2. Ability to use digital search tools and refinement techniques to complete a research task.
3. Ability to integrate information from more than one source to effectively respond to a research question.
4. Critical thinking skills to evaluate the quality of information found. 5. Communicate ideas accurately, effectively, and persuasively in writing in line with academic / professional practice.
6. Work independently with limited support.
Indicative content for this module includes:
- Project introduction and parameters.
- How to conduct a scoping review (with library services).
- Run series of test reviews.
- Protocol refinement
- Project work
- Start write up

Student will have weekly group meetings with project advisors to discuss general and technical aspects of the review. These meetings will be recorded for the benefit of the students.
Students will get weekly peer to peer feedback within the online discussion forum. General issues and the identification of best practice will be addressed by the module leader. Students will be encouraged to ask questions or for assistance from their peers. This may be particularly useful when sharing tips about tailoring the protocol and using online sources such as PubMed or Scopus.

Normally resits will be assessed by the same methodology as the first attempt, unless otherwise stated
