Module summary

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the health sector is a highly contentious issue. While there are demonstrated benefits of artificial intelligence in some clinical settings, there remains unexplored potential for the use of AI in a public health setting.

Objectives

This module will prepare you to identify and use appropriate AI tools to conduct a public health activity. These public health activities may include:

1. Analysis of a health policy;
2. Analyse health data (quantitative or qualitative);
3. A discourse analysis of a health or health system problem

This module will also uncover the potential, constraints, and ethics for using generative AI tools to support public health functions.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:

1. Establish a clear conceptual outline of the work required to conduct a project that analyses a public health issue using AI tools to support the analysis.
2. Identify and use an appropriate AI tool to conduct an analysis of a public health issue
3. Reflect on the process, limitations, accuracy and ethics of using AI, and report on findings of the analysis of a public health issue using AI.

Skills outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:

1. Plan, conduct and reflect on a health-related project using AI
2. Reflect on the strengths and limitations of using AI tools
3. Work independently on an analysis of a public health issue.
4. Communicate ideas accurately, effectively, and persuasively in writing in line with academic and professional practice.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Feedback will be provided on the project proposal.

The student will have individual or group meetings with project advisors depending on the project activity and AI tool being used. At meetings with the project advisor students will update on progress of doing the project and receive guidance on next steps activities carry out for the project. These meetings will be recorded for the benefit of the students.
