This module aims to highlight the politics of global health research funding as key indicator for types of research conducted in Global Health. It will also introduce quantitative and qualitative research designs in health providing students with skills to assess and develop innovative research proposals.
In this module you will have the opportunity to explore qualitative and quantitative research methodology by selecting problems for research and developing research objectives. You will be engaged in activities relating to the planning and implementation of appropriate and ethical research methods to address global health issues.
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Critically discuss the global health research funding process, with a particular focus on the influence of global, national, and local politics on funding.
2. Explain basic analysis of quantitative data, including differences between groups and association between variables and understand appropriate examples of how these can be used in research.
3. Assess a range of qualitative methods, including primary and secondary methods of analysis and use appropriate examples to design research.
4. Apply methods of research design to the planning of appropriate and ethically sound research projects in global health.
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
1. Generate ethical research questions or hypothesis for Global Health
2. Use appropriate ethical frameworks to plan a research project.
3. Find, evaluate and use information to develop a research project application .
4. Apply critical thinking approach to produce appropriate research methodology to answer the chosen research question.
Indicative content for this module includes:
1. Introduction to health research methods and the politics of research funding
2. Developing research questions, aims and objectives for health systems research
3. Qualitative data collection and analysis methodology
4. Simple quantitative data collection and analysis
5. Ethical considerations in research
6. Designing an appropriate research project
