Module summary

This module explores the service delivery component of health systems, with a focus on strengthening the delivery of both physical and mental health services.

Objectives

This module aims to explore current and emerging challenges facing service delivery in global health systems, including services for physical and mental health. It highlights the need to tackle inequities of access and quality of health service provision.

With a focus on both physical and mental health, you will explore service delivery holistically using case studies to unpack theoretical concepts into practical and real-world strategies to address critical issues facing global health systems today. Through appraising different mechanisms and approaches for health planning, you will develop the capacity to design innovative plans for strengthening health programmes and community-based interventions.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:

1. Appraise key concepts and principles in health service delivery.
2. Describe and analyse global and national challenges for health service delivery, with a focus on both physical and mental health.
3. Analyse and evaluate national health plans for health service delivery while considering health inequities, global targets and approaches.
4. Apply principles of a health systems framework to strengthen health service delivery.

Skills outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:

1. Develop health plans using monitoring and evaluation tools.
2. Develop systems thinking, future thinking and strategic practice relevant to a professional in global health.
3. Apply core values for health planning.

Syllabus

Indicative content for this module includes:

1. Introduction to service delivery and an overview of key concepts and challenges, including the double burden of disease.
2. Global strategies for communicable diseases and their control.
3. The emergence and prevalence of non-communicable diseases and interventions to address them.
4. Global policies for mental health services and planning for community mental health services.
5. Health services responses to accidences and violence.
6. Planning for strengthening health service delivery.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Online learning materials will provide regular opportunity for students to check their understanding (for example through formative MCQs with automated feedback). Regular group activity embedded into learning will allow self and peer assessment providing opportunities for formative feedback from peers and tutors.

A discussion board is set to support students with doing tasks and assessment in the module, this discussion board will be monitored by the Module Leader/Tutor.
