Module summary

This module introduces the concept of Global Health Systems and outlines challenges faced by Global and National Actors involved in policy development to support the provision of national health services. It provides an overarching contextualisation for other modules on the MSc, PG Dip and PG Cert programmes in Global Health.

Objectives

In this module you will have the opportunity to explore key challenges in Global Health Systems, assess the content of global responses to specific challenges and evaluate the role of international actors in developing these policy responses. You will also be engaged in planning national level responses based on global guidelines.

Learning outcomes

Subject Specific Learning Outcomes:

1. Demonstrate a critical awareness of health systems and its challenges at Global and National levels.
2. Analyse key issues influencing global health systems including, disasters and emergencies, changing lifestyles, demographic and epidemiological transition, globalisation, climate change, anti-microbial resistance and conduct a critical analysis of other health determinants in different country contexts.
3. Evaluate global level responses to key challenges affecting the health system, the role of specific global actors in developing these policy responses, and issues for implementation at a national level.
4. Reflect on your own knowledge and/or experience of a national health system and make national policy recommendations for implementing global responses to a specific challenge of the health system.

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:

1. Apply the health system framework to analyse how challenges in a health system are integrated and requires a systems thinking approach to problem solving
2. Use systems thinking, critical thinking, and data analysis to solve problems
3. Concise writing skills.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Online learning materials will provide regular opportunity for students to check their understanding (for example through formative MCQs with automated feedback). Regular group activity embedded into learning will allow self and peer assessment providing opportunities for formative feedback from peers and tutors.

A multiple-choice quiz on the first three units will be set for the preparation portion of unit 4. This will help students to recall content in the first three units and encourage them to prepare for the summative assessment.

A discussion board is set to support students with doing tasks and assessment in the module, this discussion board will be monitored by the Module Leader/Tutor.
