Module summary

This module interrogates current debates around health, equity and development. It introduces critical perspectives and questions some of the ideologies and assumptions lying behind health policies and development approaches. Through an analysis of key health policy issues, the module explores the complex, messy and political world of health policy making and planning.

Objectives

This module introduces the students to current debates around health, equity and development and encourages them to question some of the ideologies and assumptions lying behind health policies and development approaches.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:

1. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the ideologies and assumptions behind health policies and programmes, and development approaches;
2. Demonstrate a critical awareness of topical issues in international health policy;
3. Critically analyse health policies, policy making environments and processes, and the role of different actors in health policy making, from an international perspective; and
4. Explain the concept of equity (including measures of gender, age, socio-economic status, religion and ethnicity) and apply it to developing health policies and plans

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

- The Discussion Board on Minerva where the module leader monitors students' selection of topics and essay preparation, answers questions, and provides feedback;
- Observation and comments on participation and contributions during lectures, practical, workshops, and tutorials;
- Observation of class dynamics and discussions and verbal feedback given by the lecturers. 
- Group work and discussions as verbal feedback on both the content and process are provided by the lecturer.
- Group presentation on plan for the assignment: students receive feedback on their approach and proposed interventions for the essay (development of a health policy/recommendation).

A formative assessment in the form of a group presentation will be conducted to allow students to discuss their data and analysis to inform the production of the report. This activity reflects policy processes that occur in the workplace and also address the learning objectives of the module. This meets learning outcome 3 and skills outcomes 5&6.

Additional information on the Group Report The group report will require a group of 4 or five students to collect and analyse data on a health issue and make recommendations for developing a specific policy. Students will be given clear written instructions for this assessment in the module handbook, this will also be verbally shared during teaching. The instructions for this assignment will include: - A breakdown of sections expected in the full report - A breakdown of individual expectations from each student - An explanation of how marks will be allocated - How any resits will be handled - students will re-submit the individual section This group report will be between 5000-6000 words depending on the group size. Each member of the group will be asked to contribute 1000-1,250 words to the group report, meaning a group of 4 will have an expected word count of 5000 and a group of 5 will have an expected word count of 6000(maximum 6250). The report focuses on a critical analysis of data with recommendations for policy. Reflection on learning of policy analysis. Marks for the report are awards as follows: - 80% for individual section - 20% for common sections (introduction, conclusion and reflection).
