This module reflects critically on the ways in which music education relates to global concerns, and in particular the issues outlined in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs – see https://sdgs.un.org/goals). Classes will involve the discussion and analysis of key themes that emerge from the SDGs and how they may or may not relate to the diverse music education experiences, contexts, challenges and social situations of individual learners within the module. In this way, students will be introduced to ways of thinking critically, ethically and sustainably about the global priorities for education and the important role that music education can play both locally and internationally in realising such goals. Please note this is an optional module and runs subject to enrolments. If a low number of students choose this module, then the module may not run and you may be asked to choose another module.
The aim of this module is to introduce students to the issues in music education that reflect the global concerns articulated by the UN SDGs, through analysis of key texts and critical discussions of how global issues relate to the individual educational experiences of learners. The objectives are to:
• Understand theoretical and practical perspectives on the ways in which music education can contribute towards UN SDGs.
• Explore the ways in which music education can contribute to issues around social justice.
• Examine the challenges involved in delivering curricula in which sustainable global development is embedded.
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Analyse and interpret current SDGs related to music education.
2. Assess and critically analyse literature and its relationship to music education practice.
3. Effectively reflect on personal music education experiences and their relationship to SDGs.
4. Discuss critically the relationship between local educational contexts and global music education issues.
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
5. Exhibit intellectual confidence and independence of thought;
6. Take a proactive and self-reflective role in working through the evaluation of own and others’ ideas;
7. Apply learning to real-world scenarios and reflect on the skills and knowledge required to do so.
