Module summary

This module will require students to undertake an extended project in mathematics, integrating the skills and knowledge developed in the first two semesters of the programme. Under the guidance of a project supervisor, students will develop their ability to work independently and effectively communicate their findings both orally and in writing.

Objectives

The goal of this module is to plan and carry out an extended mathematics project on a topic of the student's choosing.

Learning outcomes

Subject specific learning outcomes: 
Upon successful completion of this module, students will be able to:

Critically evaluate existing literature related to their project to appreciate the context and relevance of the project.

Formulate clear and achievable research goals.

Select and apply appropriate theory and methodology in meeting the project goals.

Present findings with clarity and academic rigour and in a variety of formats.

Skills learning outcomes:
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes: 

Manage time and resources effectively to plan and complete the assigned dissertation project.

Apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills to complex mathematical problems.

Communicate research findings effectively in a variety of formats. 

Mathematical typesetting.

Act ethically and responsibly in referencing sources.

Work independently and collaboratively in academic context and show initiative.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Formative feedback through supervision supports progress, while flexibility in assessment methods ensures alignment with learning outcomes across different project types. Students will be assessed on their ability to communicate understanding of the topic by presenting their findings in a variety of formats e.g. written findings and oral presentations.
