Module summary

This module gives students a solid understanding of data visualisations and the chance to use them in practice within a business context. Students will learn about the role of visualisations in business and the latest tools used in industry. They will learn about the various types of visualisations available such as heatmaps, tree maps, scatterplots, etc. and how to effectively use them to engage with different audiences. This module assumes no prior knowledge of data visualisations and would be suitable for students with some quantitative skills in disciplines such as business, science, engineering, maths, computer science, geography etc.

Objectives

This module aims to give students a sound grounding in data visualisations, an essential skill required in today’s information-rich business world. Students will learn to develop insightful visualisations and dashboards to share findings from real business datasets.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this module, students will be able to use data visualizations to support decision-making, communicate insights, and share information in a business context. Students will be able to correctly identify appropriate visualisations to use and communicate a story effectively. The learning outcomes include the following:

1. Understand the role and importance of visualisations in a business context.
2. Gain commercial awareness of a wide variety of new and interactive visualisations available in the latest business intelligence software tools.
3. Proficiency in transformation, preparation, and modelling data for the purpose of creating interactive visualisations.
4. Critically evaluate which visualisations are most appropriate to use in different business cases.
5. Effectively curate visualisations into a story to communicate information to management and stakeholders.

Indicative content:
- Acquire and transform data for creating data visualisations
- Prepare and model data for visualisations
- Create charts and plots for communicating business information
- Learn to select appropriate data visualisations for business storytelling
- Publish data visualisations to disseminate business findings

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Each practical session will contain solutions which students can use to validate their answers. Students will also have the option to request feedback during the various ungraded class competitions.

Teaching staff will provide feedback on the 3,000 word report students submit at the end of the semester.
