LUBS 5389M Research Design and Analysis
This module is not approved as an Elective
The module aims to equip students with a thorough understanding of advanced research designs, methods and analytical techniques so they can research behaviour in organisations.
The module aims to use lectures, interactive discussions, practical exercises and assessments to support students in enhancing their ability to select and use appropriate research designs, methods and analytical tools.
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:
- Formulate different research questions
- Critically assess the efficacy of various research approaches for investigating differing research problems.
- Appropriately and accurately apply various advanced analytical techniques to answer different research questions.
- Accurately interpret the results from applying different analytical techniques.
- Report research results clearly and consistently.
- Better read and understand results sections in academic papers, which will help with cross-module learning.
The module will develop student’s:
- Analytical skills
- Ability to follow processes
- Logical thinking skills
- Ability to apply abstract statistical concepts and logical reasoning to help understand and address real-world problems.
- Ability to observe patterns in data
- Data presentation skills
Indicative content includes techniques which examine differences between groups on organisational behaviour phenomena, and others which explore relationships between different organisational behaviour phenomena, as well as consideration of research design.
Practical tutorials in analysis and other research techniques will be integrated with the theoretical teaching to reinforce learning and to support application in the Dissertation project. The module contributes to stage 1 of the QOccPsych.

This could include activities such as reading, watching videos, lab-based SPSS practice and assignment preparation.
Progress issues will be addressed informally during contact hours. Students can check their understanding of content by completing regular check-your-learning questions and by learning from the answers provided. Students can get feedback by engaging in the Discussion forum on Minerva and by asking questions in class. Students are welcome to meet with the module leader during office hours to gain feedback and discuss queries. Students can check their ability to correctly complete SPSS practical exercises as answers are shown within the sessions and answer sheets are released afterwards as well. The summative assignment will cover a new example of some of these SPSS exercises.
