The module aims to enable the practitioner to examine and develop his or her practice in relation to local and profession specific standards of advanced practice.
The principal aim of this module is to provide a structure for working at an advanced level which will enable the student to bring together self-knowledge, expertise at work and formal knowledge, in order to foster and develop the highest standards of professional health care and advanced practice for individuals, families and/or communities.
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
- explore the impact of socio-political influences on the development of professional practice;
- examine critically and debate the implications and challenges of the changing role of healthcare professionals brought about by advanced practice development;
- analyse critically the issue of power and control in healthcare decision-making and advancing practice at local, regional and national levels;
- demonstrate understanding of and critically reflect upon the requirements for professional knowledge and how it contributes in supporting advanced practice development in a specific area of healthcare provision;
- identify and analyse skills and knowledge for the leadership needed to perform at an advanced practice level;
- demonstrate the ability to synthesise and integrate theory when advancing practice.

This module will cover issues such as socio-political issues in changing practice and professional development which can be applied to the to the specific work situation of the practitioner.
In addition to this the module will also cover leadership and management aspects of advanced practice such as accountability, ethics, communication leadership skills, change management, risk management. The students will examine and evaluate different theoretical and analytic perspectives using critical reflection on their own practice-related knowledge.
Throughout the module, the students will be encouraged and expected to contribute their own perspectives and examples of advanced practice. Students will be facilitated to debate and understand the challenges and opportunities characterising advanced practice in order to stimulate opportunities for present and future learning, and professional development.

Private study will largely take the form of literature orientation and reading. Students will be advised to keep a reflective diary to link the learning outcomes to the student's workplace. The concept being that daily work results in independent learning.
Online resources will be developed to aid learning and facilitate the discussion of issues that affect advanced practice at a global level.
Student performance will be monitored through their performance (contribution to discussions) in seminars and workshops and through academic supervision. Students will be introduced to core module HECS 5298M: Advanced Practitioner Inquiry and will be encouraged to identify a work based mentor who will support them through both that module and this one (HECS 5169M). Once in place student progress with the module will be monitored by their engagement with the e-portfolio.

Students will be required to submit a 3,000 word essay on a topic(s) relating to advanced practice which will be decided by the module team. Although the keeping of a reflective journal is recommended, it is not assessed as an independent piece of work; however, students may find it helpful to refer to their reflective journal in their essay. Once in place student engagement with the e-portfolio will be mandatory.
