Module summary

The aim of this module is to enable the student to critically examine the knowledge, skills and activities required to accurately interpret the ECG, establish a differential diagnosis and consider appropriate immediate treatment and care for patients with cardiac electrophysiological dysfunction.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- demonstrate and apply in depth knowledge and understanding of cardiac electrophysiology and the principles of electrocardiography;
- demonstrate an understanding of the causes and mechanisms of altered cardiac electrical activity;
- recognise and interpret a range of electrophysiological disorders and demonstrate effective problem solving, critical thinking and decision making skills in practice;
- discuss the key principles of assessment, investigation and diagnosis of electrophysiological disorders;
- critically analyse the range of pharmacological and invasive electrical interventions used to manage electrophysiological disorders;
- explore and analyse the nature and role of inter professional team working with respect to the management and care of patients with altered cardiac electrical activity;
- reflect upon service user carer experiences.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this module students should know how to:
- interpret a range of electrophysiological changes on ECG
- diagnose the potential cause of the ECG changes
- consider appropriate immediate treatment and care.

- Normal cardiac electrophysiology
- Principles of electrocardiography
- Modes of monitoring electrophysiological function
- Normal rhythms and cardiac axis
- Ischaemia, injury and infarction on ECG
- Atrial and ventricular brady and tachyarrhythmia's
- Conduction defects and pre excitation
- Anatomical, electrolyte and drug influence upon the ECG
- Assessment, investigation and differential diagnosis based upon ECG interpretation
- Pharmacological and invasive electrical management and care of individuals with altered electrophysiological function.

- Guided reading
- Use of VLE for guided on line work eg Cardiac anatomy and physiology
- Preparation for discussion of set 12 lead ECG's / rhythm strips (ECG's will be provided each week for student led discussion the following week)
