The Digital Humanities and Culture Research Project is a capstone module for the MA Digital Humanities and Culture course. Students undertake an independent project, linked to theoretical and/or practical aspects relevant to digital materials, approaches and tools within the humanities. The topic and the format of the project is flexible and determined by the student with guidance from academic staff. The module allows students to demonstrate: their capacity for autonomous research, their awareness of current, critical issues relevant to digital technology, texts and cultures, their ability to develop and apply suitable methods and approaches to investigate their chosen topic, and their ability to represent and communicate their findings in a cogent and appropriate way. The project will demonstrate their skills and knowledge acquired and supported by the degree programme as a whole, developing specialisms as appropriate e.g. programming languages, text analytic software, digital editing, among others.
The module objectives are:
· To support students in identifying an appropriate topic (problem, dataset, framework) for independent investigation, within the scope and parameters of a PGT capstone project
· To enable students to identify, develop and apply, as appropriate, the skills required to investigate their chosen topic
· To support students in developing their literacies in digital scholarship as informed and critical readers of past and current research and debate
· To enable students to communicate their research findings and/or practice in an effective and appropriate manner, concordant with their chosen format.
To achieve these objectives, the students participate in large-group lectures, attend skills training sessions, and receive one-to-one supervision from an academic supervisor. The module formative assessments provide feedback at key milestones throughout the module.
On successful completion of the module students should be able to:
1) Evaluate past and current research associated with (an aspect of) digital scholarship
2) Devise and execute an effective project design and research methodology for their chosen topic area
3) Select and apply tools and resources available for digital texts and digital cultures scholarship, pertinent to their project
On successful completion of the module students should be able to:
1) Communicate research findings effectively, using appropriate media and digital formats (Digital Skills: Communication)
2) Manage time effectively when working autonomously on an independent project (Work Ready Skills: Time Management)
3) Show self-confidence, initiative and perseverance in the face of challenges and adversity associated with independent research (Enterprise Skills: Self-Confidence, Initiative and Perseverance)
| Delivery type | Number | Length hours | Student hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| Supervision | 5 | 1 | 5 |
| Lecture | 5 | 1 | 5 |
| Practical | 5 | 2 | 10 |
| Private study hours | 580 | ||
| Total Contact hours | 20 | ||
| Total hours (100hr per 10 credits) | 600 | ||
Students will give an informal presentation about their chosen research topic and approach at an early stage on the module, receiving formative feedback from their peers and tutors. Students will receive detailed and bespoke feedback from their supervisors throughout the module, both in face-to-face conversation and on drafts of in-progress work (text, media, objects) submitted at key points during the module.
| Assessment type | Notes | % of formal assessment |
|---|---|---|
| Coursework | On successful completion of the module students should be able to: 1) Communicate research findings effectively, using appropriate media and digital formats (Digital Skills: Communication) 2) Manage time effectively when working autonomously on an independent project (Work Ready Skills: Time Management) 3) Show self-confidence, initiative and perseverance in the face of challenges and adversity associated with independent research (Enterprise Skills: Self-Confidence, Initiative and Perseverance) | 90 |
| Coursework | Research log | 10 |
| Total percentage (Assessment Coursework) | 100 | |
Alternative resit for the research log: students will produce a work schedule and an end-of-project reflection on how their confidence and time management developed while undertaking their research project.
