ENGL5854M Reader, Writer, Text: An Introduction to Anglophone Literary and Cultural Studies

This module is not approved as an Elective

Module summary

The module helps students to enhance their knowledge of key concepts relevant to literary and cultural studies. Drawing on texts, ranging mainly from the nineteenth century to the present, the module introduces students to new ways of approaching readers and reading, writers and writing, and texts and textuality. Through lectures, workshops and seminars, students will have the opportunity to refine their skills and experience in communicating textual, critical and theoretical arguments while developing their own abilities as readers and writers. Please note this is an optional module and runs subject to enrolments. If a low number of students choose this module, then the module may not run and you may be asked to choose another module.

Objectives

The module aims to enhance students’ knowledge of concepts in literary and cultural studies, and their understanding of communicating and reading in English at postgraduate level. The focus on the module is on concepts of reading, writing and textual composition, as theorised and identified in works of Anglophone literature. Using a selection of texts, from printed books in the nineteenth century, through to the digital present, students will encounter a range of approaches to reading, writing, and textuality itself. Through lectures, workshops, and seminars students will develop their understanding of voice and text in academic communication around literary and cultural matters, through the development of their own practice in speech and writing.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1. Interpret significant features in the design and effect of texts and objects relating to readers, writers, and texts in Anglophone literatures and cultures
2. Evaluate the significance of theories and concepts relating to authorship and readership in Anglophone literature and cultural studies
3. Analyse the style and the composition of literary and cultural media using different methods.
4. Develop strategies for clear and concise communication with appropriate evidence and terminology for academic work
5. Evaluate different arguments and perspectives and find supportive evidence to develop opinions and theories
6. Reflect on self-development in skills and understanding, and plan future actions appropriately
