The purpose of the module is to investigate a range of ethical issues and aspects of malpractice related to academic contexts, and to understand how these relate to individuals’ professional practice. Within this, the module also aims to assess the nature and affordances of case study research in these areas of enquiry.
Students will develop their knowledge and understanding of a range of ethical issues and aspects of malpractice in academic contexts by investigating various aspects of teaching and research practice. Within this, they will develop their ability to analyse current issues, evaluate relevant research and to demonstrate application of knowledge to the field of practice.
1.Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of key ethical issues related to academic contexts and teaching practices.
2.Demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge of ethical issues in HE and EAP to professional practice.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of the features of case study research methods.
The module critically analyses a number of ethical considerations related to teaching, research and scholarship in HE.
Module themes include the role of:
- professional values
- code of ethics for teaching and research purposes,
- academic integrity discourses in teaching and research
- contemporary ethical discussions
- case study research approaches in complex ethical matters.

Students will be invited to submit an initial plan and a draft no later than week 10. They will receive verbal feedback on this in a tutorial.
Tutors will provide informal feedback on online discussion board posts.

In line with inclusive assessment practices, there is a choice of assessment formats available. This includes either a written case study of 3000 words or a recorded presentation of 15 minutes.
