Students will develop an ability to analyse academic texts from various perspectives in the context of scholarly literature and pedagogical application. They will draw on literature to evaluate approaches to text analyses for pedagogical and research purposes.
In this module you will develop an understanding of a range of approaches to text analysis including genre, discourse and corpus linguistic analyses. You will apply and critically evaluate these approaches for the purposes of teaching, scholarship and research.
1. Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of approaches to text analysis within a range of academic texts and contexts, and the pedagogical and scholarship applications of these.
2. Demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge of the field to professional practice, justify choices made and consider the implications of these.
3. Evaluate the use of text analysis to understand the epistemological, sociological and linguistic aspects of disciplines and discourses in HE.
The module will include the following areas: analysis of key concepts including text, genre (analysis), context, discourse (analysis); approaches to text analysis for example, genre-based approaches, corpus analysis, analysis of metadiscourse, systemic functional linguistics (SFL) and legitimation code theory (LCT) approaches as well as other linguistic and sociological analyses and their application to teaching practice.

The formative task is a practice essay with text analysis (1,500 words). The textual analytical approach selected for the formative assessment must be different from the one selected for the summative assessment.
