This module is not approved as an Elective
The module is designed to enhance the assessment competencies of practicing English teachers in China, offering insights into advanced language assessment methodologies, practical techniques, and contemporary technological tools, thereby improving their assessment literacy.
Through a combination of short lectures, individual reading tasks, small group discussions, in-class problem-solving, whole class debate, group oral presentations and an individual written essay, we aim to provide practicing English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers in China with a comprehensive understanding of the principles of language assessment, and an ability to create tests and assessments that align with international standards and contribute to educational quality assurance.
On successful completion of the module you will be able to:
1. recognize the main current issues in the field of L2 assessment, including formative classroom-based assessment.
2. explain in outline the fundamental concepts, approaches and methods used in measurement and evaluation;
3. apply these in the construction of new L2 tests or the selection of existing tests;
4. use and evaluate language assessments in ways that are appropriate for a given purpose, context and group of test takers.
On successful completion of the module you will be able to:
5. write valid and reliable test items, for both paper and digital tests.
6. use statistical tools to analyse data from tests and surveys.
7. write an extended argument in an assessment-related academic paper.
Details of the syllabus will be provided on the Minerva organisation (or equivalent) for the module
