The module aims to enhance your knowledge and expertise in planning effective foreign language teaching (particularly EFL) in young learner classrooms. It starts with an overview of key learning theories and subsequently delves into the teaching of grammar, vocabulary, listening, and speaking skills, along with literacy in the young learner classroom. Various approaches to teaching foreign languages to young learners are explored.
On completion of this module, you will:
- Learn about issues related to teaching foreign languages to young learners;
- Become familiar with theories which underpin current approaches to teaching young learners;
- Discuss how children can be taught different language skills in a foreign language;
- Enhance your understanding of how children’s development of grammar and vocabulary knowledge can be fostered in the foreign language classroom;
- Develop a range of teaching techniques, activities, tasks and materials, in terms of their potential for developing children’s foreign language skills.
On successful completion of the module you will be able to:
1. demonstrate in-depth, specialist knowledge relevant to teaching a foreign language to young learners;
2. consider issues related to teaching a foreign language to young learners in a specific context;
3. propose suggestions for addressing identified issues using theories, methods and techniques covered in the module.
Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module you will be able to:
1. develop creativity by applying theoretical concepts to create teaching materials for young learners.
2. analyse issues associated with teaching a foreign language to young learners, integrating diverse perspectives and proposing solutions.

Students will receive informal feedback following discussions in class. Progress will be monitored by means of regular reviews of student understandings, through in-class and out-of-class tasks.
