Module summary

In this fully online module you will be introduced to artificial intelligence (AI) in use within a range of educational and professional learning settings. You will critically explore the various types of AI in use, their development to date and the possible futures, both in society and more specifically in education. You will explore its capabilities, its potential drawbacks and dangers, and its growing impact on teaching and learning and on a range of education stakeholders. You will have the opportunity to experiment with, and evaluate, a range of AI tools currently in use in education, working both independently and in collaboration with your peers.

Objectives

To enable students to consider, explore and discuss current and future use of AI within the education sector, including professional and informal learning settings. Students will become aware of the discourses surrounding AI, the use of it from a range of perspectives and be able to apply a critical evaluation of the use of AI.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:

1. Show awareness of the range of issues surrounding the proliferation of AI technology in society and specifically in educational and professional learning settings.

2. Critically assess current AI technologies in use, and their impact, in a range of education sectors; at school, FE and HE level, in professional learning settings and in informal learning settings .

3. Critically consider future potential AI technologies that may be used in the education and professional learning settings, and issues with embedding these in pedagogical approaches.

Skills outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:

1 The ability to search for, evaluate and use pertinent information sources to support your arguments and draw informed conclusions.

2 The ability to thoughtfully integrate AI tools and technologies into your learning, and current and future professional roles.

3 Demonstrate effective collaboration within a group setting using AI tools and technologies

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Each participant will be expected to make an active contribution within the asynchronous and synchronous elements which will be monitored and feedback given. Each student will have two tutorials to discuss progress. There will be opportunities for formative feedback on work in progress from peers as well as the module teaching team

Individual evaluation of several AI tools and technologies, to inform use of one or more in a teaching scenario. This will involve seeking out and evaluating several currently used AI tools. Utilise the most effective tool (according to your evaluation) in a teaching scenario and provide a rationale for the choice as well as how the potential drawbacks of using AI will be mitigated.
