Module summary

This module is designed to develop the knowledge and understanding of the foundations of educational research. By examining the key issues and perspectives around the nature of educational research, and considering the potential context of their own research, students will develop the knowledge and understanding required to critically consider and align their review of the literature, identifying their research topic, formulating research questions, designing and conducting empirical research.

Objectives

To gain a critical understanding and appreciation of the principles and approaches of educational research.

To demonstrate understanding of how and educational research project is planned, executed, analysed and communicated.

Learning outcomes

1. Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the principles and approaches to educational research.
2. Evaluate the principal elements of an educational research project including the alignment of the design, methods of data acquisition, interpretation and analysis.
3. Select a research problem of their choice, and using the research literature, critique different approaches taken towards addressing it.

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:

4. The ability to communicate and collaborate constructively and professionally with peers through a variety of digital tools and networks  in order to share  ideas, to produce research, materials and resources,  and to engage in online dialogue and debate

6. The ability to weigh up different arguments and perspectives, using supporting evidence to form opinions, arguments, theories and ideas.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will be offered the opportunity to submit and/or present a proposal demonstrating their understanding of the main concepts discussed in the module. Feedback will be provided on the proposal which can then be taken on board for conducting the main assignment for the module.
