The need of regenerative biomaterials in dentistry has rapidly increased over the past years, for applications ranging from bone regeneration to pain-free management of dental decay. Continual research in biomaterials science and technology is critical to benefit from recent breakthrough in stem cell biology and microbiology, and to enable the development of safe, economically-affordable regenerative dentistry. Advances in regenerative approaches to dentistry offer the promise of restoration of function and form for much of the orofacial region. This module updates the student with biomaterial-based regenerative approaches and highlights the range of materials and forms suitable for this approach. Unless your programme is designed to be delivered fully online, your programme and modules will be delivered predominantly on campus. These teaching activities will be supported by the use of digital tools to enhance your learning and experience. We sometimes need to adapt our teaching to take account of developments in the subject, in response to new research and current affairs for example, and on occasion we may need to adapt our delivery modes too. You will be kept informed of any proposed changes to the content and delivery of your modules as described in the module catalogue and we’ll make sure you understand and agree the reasons for any changes before they are introduced.
This module aims to explore materials, synthetic and manufacturing routes, and new clinical approaches available for the restoration or regeneration of tissues relevant to the oral maxillofacial region and beyond. Students will be from a wide range of educational backgrounds and will have varying degrees of scientific knowledge and this module will give all students a common understanding of the basis of this approach and its limitations.
On completion of this module you will be able to demonstrate:
1. A detailed understanding of the range of materials used in regenerative approaches.
2. Critical thinking in the rational selection of biomaterials for use in regenerative dentistry.
3. A detailed knowledge of state-of-the-art manufacturing approaches for regenerative biomaterials in dentistry.
4. An awareness of materials interactions with cells relevant to their application in dentistry.
5. In depth understanding of regulatory frameworks in place for the translation of products to the market.

Topic of presentation will be agreed by student and tutor a week after assignment is set. Poster presentation will be assessed against its: Clinical relevance, scientific quality, presentation style and clarity. This is compensatable with the written assessment.
