The fields of textile research, in particular sustainability and innovation aspects, are constantly evolving areas. These present a multitude of opportunities that can be addressed by fundamental and applied research. You will conduct independent research, under the supervision of a supervisor/supervisory team, into a specialist area of your interest relevant to the programme. You will direct your study, with supervisory input, and develop key skills in your selected area of research. The module also entails a series of seminars to introduce methods for research and analysis. The module contains a range of formative and summative assessment activities to scaffold your progress.
On the existing MSc Textile Sustainability and Innovation programme students come from a diverse range of educational backgrounds, with some of the students coming from non-science based educational backgrounds. This module aims to scaffold students to formulate ideas and hypotheses, develop research methodology, and implement and evaluate these. This is actioned by:
• a series of seminars in the first semester to develop key research skills.
• the students in consultation with academic staff and the module leader will negotiate a research topic in Semester 2.
• This will be followed by verbal presentation (defence) of the idea and proposed methodology in front of the programme team and cohort, in the middle of Semester 2.
• The students will undertake supervised research and report on their work in an appropriate format and finally submit either a written dissertation or a research paper style article.
During the course of the module, there will also be formative activities.
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Author a critical review of the literature relevant to the field of textiles technology, sustainability or innovation, or related sectors.
2. Formulate a thorough research design with appropriate research aims, objectives and methodology, where research collection and analysis are clearly indicated and easily replicated.
3. Appraise and critique quantitative and/or qualitative data in the analysis and critical interpretation of results.
4. Construct an organised and high quality written dissertation or article style paper that provides a clear report of the research undertaken with clarity.

Formative Assessment 1 Students will submit a draft four weeks before the submission deadline via Minerva. The main supervisor will provide high-level feedback on the dissertation structure, analysis/discussion of results and application of critical thought. Formative Assessment 2 Students will be required to submit a completed self-assessment form, mapped to assessment criteria. This will promote assessment literacy and encourage students to self-reflect on their work before submission of the dissertation. The students will also receive formative feedback in the seven one-to-one supervisory meetings and in three group discussion/learning sessions with the module leader
