Year running 2025/26
This module is not approved as an Elective
Taught through a combination of lectures and practical sessions, this module will enable students to fundamentally understand the technologies behind the production of textiles and clothing and how these affect creative possibilities and limitations for designers. This will encompass the full manufacturing chain (fibres, yarns, fabrics – knitted and woven, coloration, finishing, apparel manufacturing). Moreover, this module will introduce professional skills required to test and characterise textile material. The acquired knowledge will be contextualised by evaluating contemporary innovations in the field.
This module will develop fundamental understanding of textile materials, design elements, structures and technologies; encompassing the full manufacturing chain. The module includes lectures, seminars, and practical demonstrations in laboratories. The module will equip students with the skills to analyse textiles, and to contextualise the contemporary innovations in the field.
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Debate the technology of textile materials, processing of materials into yarns, knitted and woven fabrics, coloration and finishing, and apparel manufacturing.
2. Analyse the implications of technological processes and parameters on the design process.
3. Interpret flexible fibrous assemblies and accurately determine their components and the technological processes employed to produce them.
4. Critically evaluate laboratory-based data and results and justify findings with support from evidence-based sources and literature.
Skill learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
5. Critically reflect on learning experiences, articulating technical insights of the textile manufacturing chain and evaluating personal progress.
6. Effectively interpret and communicate laboratory outputs for textile and apparel applications.

Formative Assessment 1 – Mock Class Exam This activity will help students to prepare for the exam and promote assessment literacy. The feedback will be given by peers, with the aid of model answers. Formative Assessment 2 – Product Analysis Report This assignment will help students to develop their lab based analytical skills, the report will be submitted to Minerva via an assignment for formative feedback from the module leader and contributors. This will allow allow students to self-reflect on the quality of independent analytical skills before the summative assessment.
