An important aspect is examining the subject area within wider contexts of relevant sociological, cultural, technical and commercial aspects.

• reflection on the relationship between theory, practice and the economic and commercial role of design within the fashion industry
• critical examination of current practises within the industry to identify implications on sustainability efforts (such as net zero and the circular economy), the environment and society.
• application of the knowledge gained to outline possible future scenarios for a more equitable and sustainable industry and demonstrate an informed understanding of relevant sociological, cultural, technical, and commercial aspects.

The brief will be set to the students in week 1. The coursework will enable an assessment of the student’s critical understanding of and reflection on the key concepts from the teaching materials and application to the fashion industry. This maps onto learning outcomes 1-5. The coursework will require substantial further reading, to examine the concepts, principles and other issues dealt with in lectures. Each lecture and seminar is regarded as a signpost for further reading and enquiry, requiring an average of 6 hours of independent study per topic (54 hours). Additional time for developing the report is also required (72 hours). The resit will be coursework, of between 3000-3500 words.
