Module summary

This module explores the essence of the immersive technologies, allowing students to evaluate the impact of these emerging technologies critically and creatively. The focus is on understanding how XR can augment our creative processes and uncover new possibilities for applications. Central to this exploration is the inquiry into what XR will signify for the individuals whose needs our designs aim to fulfil, and how these technologies can effectively aid us in meeting those needs.

Objectives

This module will give students the opportunity to: 

1. Gain an understanding of creative design for immersive spaces. 

2. Address the specific needs and motivations of end users by developing creative, engaging, and effective immersive solutions.

3. Engage in creative thinking activities using various idea generation methods and tools.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:

1. Appraise and analyse current challenges, theories and principles of HCI, entrepreneurial and service design in order to define a design problem or need. 

2. Generate design ideas in response to a specific brief, problem and need. 

3. Examine and plan appropriate methods for the successful development of an immersive design project. 

4. Prepare and manage the implementation and execution of immersive projects to professional standards.

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:

5. Develop essential skills in the design and development of digital/immersive solutions for employment in an industry or area of professional practice. 

6. Communicate design ideas effectively and to a professional standard

Syllabus

This module will deliver a combination of lectures and practical sessions. Lectures will engage students with the theory, research and professional approaches to Immersive Design, HCI, Extended Reality/XR (including AR, VR, and MR) and Entreprenurial & Service thinking. The lecture content will be built around (and inform) each stage of the research and design process. Practicals will give students the opportunity to put their knowledge and theory into practice by planning, designing, developing and evaluating their creative project, as well as their research.
